Committees
How is RCSA organized?
The heart of RCSA is made up of its general members, who get to experience the great events and services provided by the leadership. The leadership is three-tiered: the officers lead the coordinators, who lead committees, which organize and execute events and services. Below is a breakdown of the structure, with descriptions of the different committees and information about the officers and coordinators. If you are interested in participating on a committee, please click on the appropriate link for more information on the committee's activities and whom to contact.

Social Committee
Coordinators: Chris Torres and Salma Ratanjee (social@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
This is where the party's at! We're the ones throwing most of the less serious events for you guys, everything from dinners to Broomball. We're here to create a fun environment for you to hang out with all the cool scholars here at Cal. Come out to our events, enjoy yourself, and get to know your fellow scholars!
Academic Committee
Coordinators: Stacy Chen and Vincent Yung (academic@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
The purpose of this committee is to enhance services (mostly academic) that RCSA can provide scholars. In addition to providing test files, workshops for scholars, and teaming up with other committees for events, I want to work together with people who want to expand what Academic Committee can offer. This year, instead of setting (too many) goals beforehand, we want to be able to discuss ideas with my committee members and execute those throughout the school year. If this sounds interesting, please join the Academic Committee!
Professional Development Committee
Coordinators: Austin Bly and Suraj Bhogal (professional@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
Let's face it. In the real world, image matters. Professional Development is not just for business majors. Whether you're majoring in Sociology, Engineering, or MCB, you'll need us. Ever stuttered in front of large audiences or found your palms wet during that oh-so-important interview? Let's eliminate those awkward pauses and power up that confidence and energy to secure that career or school of your dreams.
Corporate Relations is to establish strong relationships between RCSA and corporations. Doing so will hopefully open avenues to financial sponsorship in addition to other benefits that corporations may have to offer (internships, workshops, etc.) The plan for next year is to cooperate with USPHO and determine with which corporations, if any, the University has connections with, and then to build on these connections. This will be in addition to setting goals of making contact with other corporations not previously involved with UCB. Through involvement with the Corporate Committee, one can gain a better understanding of corporate relations and exercise skills in professional development.
Peer Advising Committee
Coordinators: Candace Won and Nairi Hartooni (advising@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
Peer Advsing is a "brand spankin' new" committee this year aimed to give upperclassmen a chance to become advisors or "mentors" for underclassmen so they can help them in all aspects of Cal life including academics, social life, extracurricular activities, etc. Every year, we will attempt to match every RCSA student who is interested in this advising program so that they can attend the various social and academic events we put on throughout the year with their matched advisees/advisors! These events will be fun-filled and will be a great chance for advisors and advisees to develop effective relationships. We will also collaborate and work closley with other committees such as Academic, Faculty, and Social. We are super excited to say that we received more than 200 responses from potential advisors and advisees this past summer, which means that Peer Advising is already starting out strong and hopefully, RCSA'rs will stay involved with Peer Advising!!!
Alumni Committee
Coordinators: Shrina Shah and Stephen Chen (alumni@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
The worthy goal of the Alumni Relations Committee is to establish ongoing, mutually beneficial relationships between RCSA alumni and current RCSA members. The fall highlight is the annual Alumni Networking Reception in the wood-paneled Morrison Library. The reception provides current scholars an opportunity to make contacts, seek advice, and discuss specific jobs and careers with RCSA alumni from the professions, academia, non-profits, and the business world. In addition, this year an exciting new RCSA Alumni Externship Program is being developed for scholars. This externship program will give students the chance to shadow RCSA alumni who will, in turn, act as mentors to current scholars based on common academic and professional interests. Lastly, at the close of the year a newsletter is also published to inform alumni what RCSA has been up to on campus and beyond.
Faculty Committee
Coordinators: Sruti Bharat and Xin Xin Lin (faculty@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
The goal of the Faculty Sponsor Committee is to help foster the relationship between Faculty Sponsors and Scholars. The way in which you make use of your Faculty Sponsor is up to you, but our committee hopes to make the relationship mutually rewarding for both sponsors and sponsees. Without a doubt, Sponsors make their sponsees' academic experience more personal and less overwhelming. From advice on internships and research opportunities, to enlightening conversations on the college life, Sponsors provide a unique perspective throughout the college experience. Through events like research lab tours, faculty dinners, and professional workshops, the Faculty Sponsor Committee aims to increase the accessibility of professors to students, and to lead Scholars to the tools for getting involved.
RCSA Overnight Host Program (ROHP) Committee
Coordinators: Joey Goodknight and Michael Ellison (rohp@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
The Overnight Host Program is one of the most rewarding and fun ways to involve yourself as a RCSA member. Not only is the experience fun, but hosts have a unique opportunity to personally affect the matriculation decisions of future Cal students (Go Bears!). The committee has light duties in the fall semester. However, there is a substantial time commitment in the spring semester when the recruitment season kicks off for the 7 OHP nights (usually in early March and Cal Day). The committee will assist the coords in working with vendors, parents, and prospective students to ensure a smooth experience. The bulk of the work is just being there and sharing your enthusiasm about Cal with the prospects.
UC Liaison/Conference Committee
Coordinators: Pin Xiang and Vincent Sheu (ucbliaison@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
The Liaison committee serves as the official link between UCB and all other UC campuses. As such, we help coordinate inter-UC social activities and promote knowledge sharing in order to strengthen the Regents' Scholarship network. While the main event we will be planning for is the annual inter-UC conference in the spring, we'll also hopefully coordinate other inter-UC social events throughout the year, such as a beach day in Santa Cruz or a day out in the city. Prospective members should be creative and enthusiastic when communicating their ideas. Finally, this committee is a great avenue toward gaining contacts/friends from other schools.
Tech Committee
Coordinator: James Ide (tech@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
Tech is responsible maintaining the RCSA website, which includes development as well as making sure all Scholars can find all the information about RCSA that they may need.
Public Relations Committee
Coordinators: Erin Lam (pr@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
The PR Committee of RCSA is dedicated to the encouragement and maintenance of enriching interactions between not only Scholars, but also the association and the Cal community. Goals for 2009-2010 include effective outreach to incoming and existing Scholars, consistent accessibility to information about RCSA events and benefits, and increased emphasis on the diversity of Scholars' needs and interests. In addition to these goals, PR Committee will strive to acquaint Scholars with more fun and friendship, along with the As associated with academic achievement.
Historian Committee
Coordinators: Stephanie Kern (historian@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
Need a break from hitting the books? Want to express your creative side? Like journalism, yearbooking, designing, drawing, and/or photography? Then the Historian Committee is just the thing for you! From creating the monthly newsletters to making the yearbook CD, photographing all the good-looking RCSA members for our website gallery to mingling and networking with them, the Historian Committee does it all. Whether you're a complete newbie to an experienced vet in this arena, all dedicated, social, open-minded, creative individuals are welcome to give it a try. Help other RCSA members remember this great year. Come join in on all the fun!
Like what you just read but don't think you have the time to spare? Feel the need to let out your artistic side but don't know how? The Historian Committee is also looking for individual submissions to display for others to see and to help reshape the RCSA image. Share your poems, photographs, drawings, short stories, and editorials - whatever your heart desires. Don't be shy! Let us help YOU express yourself. We really do want what you've got!
Community Service Committee
Coordinators: Britney Kitamata-Wong and Gopal Lalchandani (service@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
Hoping to give back to the community? Inquire within! Be a mentor for a local high school student preparing for college years, or come out to our many community service events coordinated with Habitat for Humanity and the ASUC to bond with your fellow RCSA scholars and provide help where it's needed! Also, if you're interested, we'll be keeping you posted with smaller community service events that you can contribute to in case you want more. Have fun and show your appreciation for RCSA, Cal, and Berkeley!
Sustainability Committee
Coordinators: Elizabeth Chan and Amman Desai (sustainability@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
At Sustainability Committee, we are all about going green and reducing RCSA's impact on the environment while making a difference on campus as well. Our goal is to get as many RCSA events green certified by the Office of Sustainability by consulting and advising the different groups putting on events and coming up with sustainable solutions. We also have some great projects and events of our own. This year, we have some awesome field trips, guest speakers, and green events of our own that are sure to inspire RCSA members to go green. All we are looking for are dedicated individuals who are interested in sustainability. It doesn't matter how much previous experience or knowledge you have on this subject, or if your major has anything to do with our committee. If you want to make a positive impact, and help RCSA reduce its environmental impact, then join our committee.
Corporate Relations Committee
Coordinators: Kate Massey and Nashia Lalani (corporate@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
Finance Committee
Coordinators: Jennifer Chen and Richard Ma (fundraising@rcsa.berkeley.edu)
The Finance/Fundraising Committee plays the crucial role in raising money for RCSA. From designing and ordering club sweatshirts to selling food at Cal football games, we oversee a range of creative, exciting, and lucrative fundraising events throughout the year. The committee plays an integral role within RCSA, not just because we bring in the moolah, but because we also partner with other committees in putting on events and projects. Whether you are business-oriented, interested in learning more about the financial world, or just want to be a part of the fundraising team for RCSA, we invite you to join our committee!
